9 people wounded after apparent drive-by shooting in New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. — At least nine people -- including a juvenile -- were wounded in a shooting Thursday in Newark, New Jersey, city officials said.

Initially, officials said seven adults and one juvenile were hurt, WPIX-TV reported. Another adult victim was later reported.

Update 11:58 p.m. EDT June 30: During a news conference, Newark Acting Public Safety Director Raul Malave said the suspect’s vehicle was a white Honda Pilot that was reported stolen Thursday out of Jersey City.

“It appears to have been a drive-by shooting,” Malave told reporters. He added that investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras for potential clues, NJ.com reported.

The juvenile was listed as 17 years old, WPIX-TV reported.

Original report: The city’s gunfire detection system alerted police to the shooting shortly after 6 p.m. on the 200 block of Clinton Place, NJ.com reported. The shooting appeared to have happened outside a grocery store, WNBC-TV reported.

“Three adult victims and one juvenile arrived at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for treatment of gunshot injuries,” Newark Acting Public Safety Director Raul Malave told NJ.com in an email. “Four other adult victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries.”

All nine victims are in stable condition, city officials told WABC-TV.

Officials have not released any information about what led to the shooting, according to WPIX.

Police said an investigation was ongoing.
