Find out what Rise Against's 'Nowhere Generation' "Sounds Like" live on headlining tour

Along with its instantly hum-able, anthemic title track, Rise Against's new album, Nowhere Generation, boasts one of the heaviest instrumental sections from the Chicago punks in recent memory.

The moment arrives about two-thirds through the song "Sounds Like." Right after frontman Tim McIlrath sings the line, "This is what it sounds like," he shows you exactly what he means as Rise Against dives into a pummeling guitar riff.

"That was one of my favorite riffs on the record," McIlrath tells ABC Audio. "I tend to write lyrics after I'm [done] putting the song together, and that just dovetailed so nicely," he explains. "I wanted to have a song that had that reference, and it worked out perfect that it was just right into that riff -- 'This is what it sounds like' -- and then we go into the riff and that instrumental part."

That kind of instrumental dive is something of a rarity in the Rise Against sound, which McIlrath describes as "pretty wall-to-wall vocals for the most part."

"If we can find an interesting musical part that can stand on its own legs, then we like to do it," he says. "That was a great moment where I could actually herald it in with a lyric."
