Sheriff: Minivan with $570K in drug money hits bus carrying Nebraska girls soccer team

LINCOLN, Neb. — A minivan carrying approximately $570,000 of suspected drug money crashed into a bus transporting a Nebraska high school girls soccer team, authorities said.

In a news release, the Seward County Sheriff’s Office said the bus was transporting the Pius X Catholic High School girls soccer team to North Platte for a match, KETV reported. The crash occurred on Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon, the television station reported.

Sheriff Mike Vance said both of the drivers were taken to a hospital in Lincoln for their injuries, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star. None of the players were hurt in the 2 p.m. CDT crash, the newspaper reported.

During the course of the initial investigation, deputies confirmed that the minivan contained $570,000 in suspected drug money, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.

According to the sheriff’s office, the minivan driver, a 62-year-old man from California, is a former law enforcement officer, KOLN reported.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
