Former Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming dead at 77

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Former U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, a Republican from Wyoming, has died at age 77.

According to The Associated Press, the lawmaker, who retired earlier this year after serving four Senate terms, died Monday, just days after he was hospitalized for injuries he suffered in a bicycle accident. Authorities said he appeared to be the only person involved in the incident, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday and left him with a broken neck and ribs, the news agency reported.

A statement posted to Enzi’s Twitter account overnight said the senator’s family “expresses their deep appreciation for all of the prayers, support and concern.”

“They now ask for privacy and continued prayers during this difficult time,” the statement read. “The family is planning to hold a celebration of a life well-lived, with details to be shared later.”

Enzi leaves behind a wife, two daughters, a son and several grandchildren, the AP reported.

Before Enzi’s death, several lawmakers, including successor Sen. Cynthia Lummis, took to Twitter earlier Monday to offer prayers for the senator and his family. Here’s what they were saying:
