Somewhere in this crazy, mixed-up world, there is a man in a black top hat with a huge smile on his face. Why? Because Axl Rose took one of the most comically brilliant faceplants in rock ‘n’ roll history at the 2012 Hellfest in Clisson, France.
If you’ve ever seen old ‘Saturday Night Live’ footage of Chevy Chase, you would know that few could take a spill like him. However, at Hellfest, the Guns N’ Roses frontman gave the crowd a performance of ‘Welcome to the Tumble’ when he tripped on the stairs of the band’s drum riser.
Actually, it was during ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ when Axl took this soon-to-be-legendary fall. As the current GN’R lineup played the intro to the song, Axl began to ascend the stairs from the direction of stage left. About one-second before the first verse, the singer took a tumble that introduced face to floor as Axl’s cowboy hat flew off his head. Defying the laws of physics, the singer’s sunglasses somehow managed to stay on.
To give Axl a bit of credit, the fall didn’t cause him to miss a single word (even though he began with the wrong verse) as the frontman gathered himself and continued on with the classic GN’R track.
It’s not the first time Rose has taken a spill this year. In Liverpool, England, the singer fell backwards while exiting the stage at the end of the night. And in Russia, he apparently fell off a table at an after-show party, bruising his leg. But like the Energizer Bunny, Rose takes a licking but keeps on ticking.
