Radiohead Stage Collapse Victim Revealed To Be Drum Tech Scott Johnson

The victim of the disastrous stage collapse that took place at Radiohead‘s planned Saturday (June 16) performance in Toronto has been revealed as the British alt-rockers’ own drum tech, Scott Johnson.
Stage collapse deaths have become more and more frequent in recent years, causing bands and promoters to always be conscious of inclement weather conditions when performing at an outdoor venue. However, the latest tragedy happened amid sunny skies while the crew was still setting up for Radiohead’s performance — which was ultimately canceled — later that night in Downview Park.

According to CBS News, one on-looker said, “It was like fireworks went off and then boom, the stage just crumbled to the ground in a matter of seconds.” The collapse injured three and claimed the life of one, who, as mentioned earlier, was later identified as Radiohead drum tech Scott Johnson. Drummer Philip Selway posted this statement about Johnson on the band’s official website:

“We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.
Two of the others injured during the incident were treated at the scene, while the third, an unidentified 45-year old man, was hospitalized for head injuries and is now showing signs of improvement. It is still unknown what exactly caused the collapse, but the police say three inspectors and two engineers are combing the wreckage to determine what went wrong.

Radiohead’s next show is set for June 30 at Hyppodrome Capanelle in Rome, Italy, which kicks off a string of overseas dates that run through most of July.
