Dave Grohl and co were targeted by the Westboro Baptist Church after releasing a spoof homo-erotic video called Hot Buns to promote their current tour.
The Church, well known for its “God Hates Fags” posters, were out in force in Kansas City on Friday, with placards including the phrases “Thank God for dead soldiers” and “You’re going to Hell.”
But the Foos pulled up on a flat-back truck, dressed in their Hot Buns costumes, and performed a specially-written song called Keep It Clean for the picketers.
Grohl sang “Driving all night, got a hankering for somethin’ – think I’m in the mood for some hot man muffin” to a bemused crowd of protesters, while fans waved placards reading “Foo You.”
During the song he announced: “I don’t care if you’re black or white or purple or green, whether you’re Pennsylvanian on Transylvanian, Lady Gaga or Lady Antebellum. It takes all kinds. God bless America.”
Even a few members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who recently called the Foos “hard-hearted, hell-bound and hedonistic,” seemed impressed.
