In the continuing battle to own the music game genre Harmonix and MTV Games have fired a salvo that could perhaps settle things for good. In a stunning press release this morning the two companies announced that Nickelback will make their debut in Rock Band this week. You heard it here first: Guitar Hero has officially won music games.

Starting on June 29th the following tracks will be available on Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3:

Burn It to the Ground
Figured You Out
Never Again

The collection of songs is titled "Nickelback Pack 01," indicating that there will be subsequent Nickelback song packs released for Rock Band and cementing its runner-up status as a music rhythm game.

However, if you happen to love Nickelback and ardently follow their every move, the decision to appear on Rock Band might come as a surprise. The lead singer has previously issued negative statements about music games, stating:

"It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring. So kids, start rock bands. Set down the 'Guitar Hero,' learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock and roll package together, to get out there." -ps3.ign.com
