Alt-rock godfathers R.E.M. have finished recording their latest album, titled Collapse Into Now and due in March from Warner Bros. According to SPIN, the new LP will feature guest appearances from Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, and-- of all people-- electro sex rapper Peaches.
The band recorded the LP in Berlin, New Orleans, and Nashville with producer Jacknife Lee, who also produced the last R.E.M. album, Accelerate. Smith sings on the album-closing track "Blue", while Vedder chips in on a song called "It Happened Today". The as-yet-untitled Peaches collab also features guest work from Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye.
Talking to Spin, band member Mike Mills says, "We wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice, mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers." He also describes the album as a "very personal, very human record-- not only to Michael [Stipe], but personal and human in the sense of the narrative of the songs, the protagonists of the songs." -pitchfork.com
