CITY OF SAN ANTONIO FLOOD CLEANUP AND REPAIR WORK
SAN ANTONIO RESIDENTS URGED TO CALL 3-1-1 TO REPORT CITY INFRASTRUCTURE FLOOD DAMAGE. The City of San Antonio outlined a comprehensive city-wide cleanup and repair plan targeting all areas in the city damaged and/or impacted by high-water flooding during the storm event on Saturday, May 25, 2013. A Flood Damage Assessment and Repair Schedule has been compiled, along with a detailed work schedule. The Assessment & Schedule captures cleanup and repair needs for streets, debris removal, cleaning of drainage facilities, alleys and park facilities. This work plan will provide residents an opportunity to see when Public Works, Solid Waste, Parks & Recreation and other City crews will be mobilizing in their affected areas to repair damages caused by the flood event. The Flood Damage Assessment and Repair Schedule is available for public access and review on the Department of Public Works’ website: www.sanantonio.gov/publicworks. The City’s main website at www.sanantonio.gov also has a link to the report listed on the Public Works’ website. City crews have been redirected from normal operations to focus on addressing damages caused by the flood event to ensure quick responses to all service requests. San Antonio residents who discover new flood damage in and around their neighborhoods should continue to report damage to the City by calling 3-1-1. The City requests that residents allow Public Works, Solid Waste, Parks & Recreation and other City response team’s time to address their impacted areas and not to attempt any street repairs or major cleanup beyond their homes as a safety precaution.
Red Cross Water Safety Tips
Swimming is the most popular summer activity, so the American Red Cross reminds you to be water safe this summer. The best thing you can do to help your family stay safe is to enroll in age-appropriate swim lessons. Also, swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, always swim with a buddy, install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub, and actively supervise children whenever around the water. For many more tips on how you and your family can practice water safety this summer, visit redcross.org/watersafetytips.
Metro Health Reminds Community of West Nile Prevention Tips
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) reminds the community to reduce exposures to mosquitoes which can carry West Nile Virus. In light of recent torrential rains and the first case of West Nile Virus reported this year in the state, residents are encouraged to prevent exposures by following these tips: Inspect your homes for standing water and empty the container. Look in places not commonly checked, such as gutters, old tires, trash can lids, etc., to ensure there is no standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks to protect exposed skin during dusk and dawn, which is when mosquitoes are active. Avoid use of perfumes and colognes when working outdoors. Use air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and windows to keep mosquitoes from entering the home. Use an insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin on skin not covered by clothing. Insect repellents should not be used on young infants. Do not spray aerosol or pump products in enclosed areas or directly on your face Contact: Carol Schliesinger, Public Relations Manager, 207-8172 office/669-2413 cell
