Anna Rado was the youngest of three children in the Weiss family and lived in Rajka, Hungary. When she was 13 years old, she was transported to Auschwitz on a crowded cattle car, a three-day journey filled with suffering and death. Incredibly, she survived Auschwitz and after the war made her way back to Hungary in 1945, where she was reunited with her brother. For 11 years they endured Communist hardships, and in 1956 the immigrated to the United States and joined their sister, Suzanne Jalnos, in San Antonio. Mrs. Rado has volunteered for the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio for many years, telling her story of survival to student and community groups in efforts to teach them about what happened during the Holocaust. Her motivation to volunteer comes from her desire to combat Holocaust deniers who claim the Holocaust never happened. She wants future generations to remember history so that it never happens again. She also finds her motivation to volunteer in the students themselves. By sharing her story of survival, she wants them to walk away believing that even if they encounter hard times in their lives, they can survive. She wants to teach them not to hate, to forgive, and to treat others with the compassion and humanity we all deserve.
